Artist Kathryn
Millsaps Morris’ Atlanta-based company, Millsaps
Murals and Designs, Inc., specializes in custom murals, trompe
l’oeil, gilding, marbling, decorative finishes, and fine art. Kathryn
is a native of Jackson, Mississippi. She chose the Millsaps name for her
company as it is emblematic of her familial ties to Mississippi’s
cultural heritage. Her appreciation for the arts has been enhanced by
a compilation of experiences, particularly her exposure to the beautiful
aesthetics, charm, and history of the South. Kathryn’s love for art began at an early age when she remembers painting murals on the walls of her playhouse. She gained national recognition in high school for her art portfolio and was awarded art and scholastic scholarships to the University of Mississippi. She later transferred to the University of Texas in Austin to major in Textiles and Apparel Design. Kathryn was recognized as a top design student and was awarded the title, Best Evening Wear Design of the Year. After graduation, Miss Morris moved to New York to pursue a career in the fashion industry. While there, she maintained her interest in painting through fashion illustration. This talent led her to illustration commissions for a handbag designer in New York as well as women’s clothing boutiques. Kathryn’s background and creativity directed her career into the field of decorative arts. She has studied extensively under well-known professionals in the industry such as Jo Anne Day, of the Day Studio in San Francisco, and Bob Marx at the Finishing School in New York. Both her education and background have laid a strong foundation for her decorative arts company. Although Millsaps Murals and Designs, Inc. is fairly new to the Atlanta area, it has quickly gained recognition. Kathryn was chosen to participate as a featured artist in a Southern Living Showhouse, which will be available for tour through September. Her company has also been featured in local publications such as The Piedmont Review. While local press has helped, Kathryn has continued to gain exposure through other areas of promotion. In April 2004 her company hosted a successful art event titled, “Toasting Spring,” which showcased a collection of her paintings. Her work is also currently being displayed at local restaurants. Kathryn believes that continued promotion and relationship building is the only way to have a successful business as an artist. As Kathryn Morris continues to build her reputation as the owner of Millsaps Murals and Designs, Inc., she strives to maintain a caliber of work that sets her company apart. While Kathryn admits that building a company as an artist has its challenges, she also believes that the creative mind is a gift. Artists seek and thrive on creative solutions, and that is how they distinguish themselves from others. The role of the artist is not only to turn a vision into a reality, but also to re-invent and present a fresh perspective to the world. |
